Fire Department Partners with Sheriff's Office to Upgrade Severe Weather Monitoring

SWEETWATER, Texas – The Sweetwater Fire Department, in partnership with the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office, recently upgraded severe weather warning capabilities to better monitor conditions and notify residents of severe weather.

In June 2025, the Sweetwater Fire Department implemented the CommanderOne platform. This system ensures daily diagnostics of all warning sirens to confirm signal integrity and operational readiness. Personnel can activate and control the system from both computer and mobile devices, greatly increasing response speed and flexibility in emergencies. Additionally, sirens will automatically sound when a severe weather event is occurring or threatening our area.

“This upgrade is a major step forward in how we protect our community,” said Fire Chief Tad Baird. “When our personnel are actively responding to calls during severe weather events, they are unable to continuously monitor the warning sirens in real time. CommanderOne ensures those systems are automatically activated and functioning properly, giving the public critical time to react.”

The cost for the Sweetwater Fire Department to join the platform totaled $1,800. This cost includes reprogramming radio frequencies for each siren and configuring them to work cohesively with the Nolan County sirens. The Sweetwater Fire Department would like to thank the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office for their continued partnership, collaboration and commitment to public safety.

City Issues Winter Weather Update

City officials in Sweetwater issued a winter weather update Friday, January 23, urging residents to prepare for dangerous cold, icy conditions, and potential service disruptions through early next week.

City officials in Sweetwater issued a winter weather update Friday, January 23, urging residents to prepare for dangerous cold, icy conditions, and potential service disruptions through early next week. The City Landfill and Recycling Center will be closed on Saturday, January 24, and Monday, January 26, while Republic Services trash collection will operate on an adjusted schedule. Friday collection routes will begin early at 4:30 a.m., and Monday routes are expected to run as scheduled if road conditions allow. If streets remain hazardous, Monday service will shift to a one-day delay. Residents are encouraged to place carts out as usual but to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during early morning and nighttime hours when ice is most likely to form.

To support residents who may be without adequate heat, a community warming shelter has opened at The SHOP, 509 Locust. The shelter opened at 10:00 a.m. Friday and will remain open 24 hours a day through Tuesday, January 27. City officials stress that no one should attempt to endure freezing temperatures alone and encourage residents to check on elderly neighbors, those with disabilities, and anyone experiencing heating issues. Officials also remind residents to protect their homes by insulating exposed pipes, allowing faucets to drip during extreme cold, opening cabinet doors to circulate warm air, and knowing how to safely shut off water in the event of a burst pipe. Space heaters should be used with caution, kept at least three feet away from flammable materials, and never left unattended.

Additional safety guidance includes bringing pets indoors, providing adequate shelter and unfrozen water for animals, and covering or moving sensitive plants. Residents who must drive should reduce speed, increase following distance, and carry emergency supplies such as blankets, water, and a fully charged phone. Carbon monoxide risks also increase during winter storms, and officials warn against using generators, grills, or gas appliances indoors. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by signing up for emergency alerts and city updates through Nixle by texting 79556 to 888-777. City officials note that updates will continue as conditions evolve and ask residents to monitor local announcements throughout the winter weather event.

Upcoming Planning and Zoning Commission Meeting

The City of Sweetwater Planning and Zoning Commission will meet Tuesday evening to address several issues that could shape how the community grows and develops in the coming years, including changes to property boundaries, long-range land use planning, and the city’s zoning rules. The meeting is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. on January 27, 2026, in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, and is open to the public.

After opening formalities and an opportunity for public input on items not already scheduled for a hearing, commissioners will consider approval of minutes from several previous meetings held in November and December. While largely procedural, this step ensures that past discussions and decisions are accurately recorded, which is important for transparency and continuity in city planning.

The most significant items on the agenda fall under the public hearing portion of the meeting. One hearing will focus on a proposed replat in the Highland Addition. The request would combine three existing residential lots—Lots 4, 5, and 6 in Block 73—into a single lot, to be known as Lot 4A. For nearby residents, replats can affect neighborhood layout, potential future construction, and property boundaries. While combining lots does not automatically approve new development, it can make larger-scale projects possible, such as a new home, expansion, or redevelopment that would not fit on smaller individual lots.

Commissioners will also hear and discuss a proposed amendment to the Future Land Use Map, which is part of the city’s Comprehensive Plan adopted in 2022. The Future Land Use Map serves as a long-term guide for where residential, commercial, industrial, and public uses are encouraged across Sweetwater. Changes to this map can signal shifts in how certain areas may develop over time, potentially affecting traffic patterns, neighborhood character, and access to services. Although the commission does not make the final decision, its recommendation to the City Council carries significant weight.

Another major topic will be a proposed update to the Zoning Land Use Ordinance. Zoning rules determine what types of buildings and activities are allowed in different parts of the city, along with standards such as building height, setbacks, and parking. An update to the ordinance may reflect current development trends, state law changes, or community priorities identified since the last revision. For residents and business owners, zoning updates can influence property values, redevelopment opportunities, and how compatible neighboring land uses are managed.

Public participation is encouraged, particularly during the scheduled public hearings, when citizens may comment on the specific items under consideration. The Planning and Zoning Commission will ultimately make recommendations on the land use map and zoning ordinance updates to the City of Sweetwater City Council, which will consider the matters at a later date.

December SISD Board Meeting

The Sweetwater Independent School District Board of Trustees met Wednesday evening, Dec. 17, at the Puckett-Dudensing CTE Building to address community updates, ongoing bond projects, and district business that could have a direct impact on students, families, and taxpayers across Sweetwater. The meeting was called to order shortly after 5:30 p.m. by Board President Mark Garcia, with a quorum present and the pledges to the American and Texas flags opening the session.

During the public forum portion of the meeting, local resident Russ Petty highlighted two community-focused efforts. He reported on the Rotary Club Shoe Drive held earlier that day, an annual project that helps provide shoes to local children in need, easing a financial burden for families while ensuring students are prepared for school. Petty also shared an update on progress at the Lone Star Learning Center, a facility designed to support alternative and specialized programs as well as child-care.

Petty also shared an update on progress at the Lone Star Learning Center, a facility designed to support alternative and specialized programs as well as child-care.

One of the most significant discussions for local taxpayers centered on bond-related construction projects. Superintendent Reggy Spencer updated the board on ongoing issues with the district’s gym construction, prompting trustees to plan a tour of the facility following the meeting to better understand the concerns firsthand. The board also approved moving forward with a request from East Ridge Elementary School to install a playground shade structure using excess bond funds. Shade structures are especially relevant in Sweetwater’s climate, helping protect children from heat exposure and making outdoor play safer and more accessible throughout the school year.

The board also finalized changes to upcoming meeting dates, settling on Wednesday, Jan. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 11, both at 5:30 p.m., to better accommodate schedules. No action was taken on additional bond-related projects, as trustees agreed to table that discussion for a future meeting.

Superintendent reports included an explanation of Policy Update 126, which relates to Senate Bill 8, also known as the Texas Women’s Privacy Act. Superintendent Spencer explained that new signage will be posted across district facilities to comply with state requirements. For parents and community members, this update reflects how state laws can affect daily operations within local schools, including facility use and posted notices.

The board approved routine business items through the consent agenda, including monthly meeting minutes and district financials, signaling continued oversight of district operations and spending. No closed session was held, as there were no personnel matters requiring private discussion. The meeting concluded at 6:14 p.m.

Overall, the meeting reflected a focus on community partnerships, responsible use of bond funds, and compliance with state policies — issues that directly affect students, families, and residents throughout Sweetwater.
